Roundhouse and Shop Tours

Before or after you ride the train, you can tour the East Broad Top's eight-stall working roundhouse and our extensive machine-shops complex, which was largely complete by 1907 and which is among the best preserved in the country. On your tour, which will last more than an hour, you'll learn why the railroad was built and how it survived, and you’ll see locomotives, cars, and buildings up close. You'll also see how the railroad's equipment was maintained in the shops, where a stationary steam engine powered an overhead belt-drive system to run lathes, planers, drills, shapers, and more–all still in place. And you'll hear colorful stories about the people who ran the railroad in decades past, as well as about those who keep it alive today.

Tours are available Saturdays and Sundays only through the end of October, beginning at 12:30. (There will be no tours during our Day Out With Thomas event.) The cost is $8 per person. Keep in mind that while we do our best to make our tours interesting to all our visitors, the tours are geared to adults. Children 10 and younger may wish to do something else, like get a treat from our snack bar or take a ride on one of our antique speeders.
